Jason Statham Eager for Sequel to One of His Most Underrated Films

Jason Statham’s career has been a rollercoaster of successes and setbacks. While the action star has graced blockbusters like Fast & Furious and Snatch, other projects like Homefront received mixed reviews. Among his diverse portfolio, one particular film stands out as a project he’s passionate about revisiting.

Spy: The Unexpected Hit That Deserves a Second Chapter

Released in 2015, Spy emerged as a brilliant espionage comedy that cleverly satirizes the iconic James Bond franchise. Statham’s portrayal of Rick Ford – a hilariously over-the-top parody of the “perfect spy” – showcased his often-overlooked comedic talents. Despite the actor’s enthusiasm and collaboration with director Paul Feig on developing a sequel, the project remains in limbo due to lack of studio interest.

The Creative Team’s Determination

Paul Feig recently shared with Games Radar his continued interest in the project: “I definitely felt we could do more with this universe, but it hasn’t materialized due to lack of studio interest. I have what I believe is the perfect idea for Spy 2, and I’m incredibly excited about it, but when it comes to the contractual details…”

Both Statham and his co-star Melissa McCarthy have repeatedly expressed their eagerness to return. “We all want to make it happen – I’m not sure what else I need to do,” McCarthy stated. Statham was equally direct in his interview with Entertainment Weekly, declaring, “I want to do another Spy,” while emphasizing his preference for working with seasoned directors like Feig and Guy Ritchie.

The Original’s Success Story

The first film follows Susan Cooper (McCarthy), an unassuming CIA analyst who becomes the unsung hero behind the agency’s most dangerous missions. When her partner (Jude Law) disappears and another agent (Statham) becomes compromised, Susan volunteers to infiltrate a deadly arms dealer’s world to prevent global catastrophe.

Critical and Commercial Triumph

Spy proved itself both critically and commercially:

  • Earned an impressive 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes
  • Generated over $235 million worldwide against a $65 million budget
  • Received praise for its fresh take on the spy genre
  • Demonstrated perfect chemistry between McCarthy and Statham

Why a Sequel Makes Sense

The original film’s success wasn’t just about numbers. It brilliantly combined:

  • Smart comedy that elevated beyond typical parody
  • Strong character development
  • Genuine action sequences
  • Chemistry between its lead actors

A sequel could explore:

  • Susan Cooper’s evolution as a field agent
  • Rick Ford’s ongoing delusions of grandeur
  • New international threats
  • Deeper exploration of the spy agency’s dynamics

Looking Forward

While fans and creators remain hopeful, the future of Spy 2 ultimately depends on studio decision-makers recognizing the potential in this unique action-comedy franchise. Given the current industry’s interest in established properties and the original’s proven success, perhaps it’s time for the studio to reconsider its position.
